Greed and Power

You might read that headline and think this is going to be another critique of our friends in Washington DC.

No – this time my ire is aimed directly at a liberal institution which frankly has done something so unfathomable that I’m struggling to comprehend it.

This institution has long been a champion of lesbian and LGBTQ rights, diversity, and celebrating the power of women. But my friends all of that slips away when the almighty dollar is at stake. This time they throw their own to the wolves and the only explanation is greed and power.

I give you the leaders of women’s tennis, and specifically the heads of the four major “grand slam” tournaments.

If you’ve paid any attention to the news this week a young woman who was slated to participate in the French Open named Naomi Osaka informed everyone she would not be doing any press conferences during the open and cited both anxiety and her mental health.

Step back with me here for a second – a young woman, nay a young ASIAN woman, basically says “Hey, this makes me super uncomfortable, I’ve had depression issues in my life, and I just can’t do this” and what does she get?

That’s right she gets fined. Too add insult to injury the four major grand slam tournament leaders issued a joint statement on her decision:

We have advised Naomi Osaka that should she continue to ignore her media obligations during the tournament, she would be exposing herself to possible further Code of Conduct infringement consequences. As might be expected, repeat violations attract tougher sanctions including default from the tournament (Code of Conduct article III T.) and the trigger of a major offense investigation that could lead to more substantial fines and future Grand Slam suspensions (Code of Conduct article IV A.3.).

Are you fucking kidding me? Do they not care about this woman’s mental health at all? Fuck no they don’t and the ONLY reason they don’t is simple.

It’s greed and power. Did I mention she’s the #2 ranked player in the world?

The people running this sport should be ashamed of themselves. This isn’t some NFL prima donna who just doesn’t want to take time away from his golf schedule to talk to reporters, this is a young woman who has flat out admitted – I have a problem and I need help.

She has withdrawn from the tournament and I’m glad she did. I hope their ratings suffer accordingly. If a single Asian person watches a moment of this tournament I’d question their decision. If this young woman woke up tomorrow and said screw this and took her life, how would they all feel? Like the hell they deserve I hope.

God speed to you Naomi Osaka, I’m praying for you.
